How does counselling work

How does counselling work?

Appointments are usually once a week so that we can get to know each other and maintain therapeutic momentum, and each session lasts for 50 minutes. In individual work, we can work for a short period of time and with a specific focus, or we can work on an open-ended basis, which is more suitable for deeper and more complex issues.

Generally, you will have a sense of when you are ready to finish counselling. It is important to take time to end counselling properly, so that we can review the journey you have been on and the progress you have made, as well as planning strategies for future challenges that you may anticipate.

I work face to face, by phone and also online platforms. Telephone or online sessions (eg Zoom or FaceTime) can work well if regular face-to-face sessions are difficult or not advised due to Covid-19.

Confidentiality

Anything discussed between us in a counselling session is confidential. Supervision is required by the BACP Ethical Framework and I have regular supervision where I might discuss our work with my professional supervisor. This enables me to work as well I can with you, and in this process your identity is not shared. My supervisor is also bound by the UKCP Ethical Framework for Good Practice.

In exceptional circumstances, if I were concerned about your safety or that of someone close to you, I would seek your permission to break that confidentiality - but this situation would always be discussed with you first.

In the case of a disclosure regarding fraud, drug trafficking, or acts of terrorism (in line with the Terrorism Act 2000), I would be bound to pass on information to the relevant authorities. If you would like to, we can discuss this more in an initial session or by phone.
